Vertical Farming is the practice of growing crops vertically instead of horizontally. This practice is done without soil with the plants being fed directly from their roots.
We are building a prototype250 sqm vertical farming greenhouse using pyramids and will expand by building a second500 sqm greenhouse as well.
CONVENTIONAL FARMING: WATER USAGE
Conventional Farming uses 69% of the world’s fresh water reserves.
Approximately 300 million hectors of land is subject to watering which accounts to 20% percent of all farmlands.
Since watering crops increases the efficiency of plants by 400% it is predicted that rain depended farming will decrease by 50% from 2020 onwards.
CONVENTIONAL FARMING: PESTICIDES
A large proportion of crops can’t perform efficiently because of insects, viruses, nematodes and unwanted weeds. To disable the secretors pesticides have been developed where the pesticides alter the insect or unwanted plants metbolism and kills it. Although pesticides help secure plants it is deadly for the environment and humans as well. Some side effects are listed on the left.
CONVENTIONAL FARMING: SOIL
Soil Salinity could ocur with consistent farming of the same type of crops over a long period of time.
Fallowing takes time and is a wastefull use of land.
Pesticides are used kill such bacteria and unwanted weeds causing health risks to humans.
Bacteria such as pathogens and nematods are contaminated through the soil.
